This is a Vaseline Opalescent Glass Spooner... in the “3-N-1" pattern. It stands 5 and 3/4 inches tall... 4 ½ inches across the top... and 3 inches across the deeply imprinted Starburst bottom. It appears to be in excellent condition... and I might add that this Vaseline Glass Spooner simply “explodes” with brilliant fluorescence when placed under the Black Light. A generous frosting of Opalescence decorated the top rim... and then quickly dissipates as it moves down the sides of the Spooner... only to reveal the high quality... crystal like... body glass of this outstanding piece. The short-footed base also carries just a light frosting of Opalescence on its outer rim. I’ve run into a number of these “3-N-1" Spooners in my fifty plus years of working with glassware... but I’ve never discovered where the “3-N-1" designation originated... nor do I know the glassmaker responsible for it. With no “maker’s mark” to help us with the identification... we’ll have to leave that “mystery” unsolved for now!!!... We find that a good portion of all glassware was produced from molds without identifying marks. Over the years glass makers moved not only molds... but also finished products... between companies for one reason of another... and the presence of a “maker’s mark” in a mold would make it impractical to do this. In some cases... we recognize a pattern... and can attribute it to a specific a maker. But in many cases... this doesn’t hold true. As old glass makers closed down... and their molds are “scattered to the winds”... it has become ever more difficult to fallow the elusive... “trail of the makers”!!!... Chances are good that this beauty started out life with a “paper label” to identify it’s maker. This labels most often succumbed to the first warm soapy bath the piece was subjected to. Leaving us with no easy means of identification. I might also mention that Vaseline glass has becoming quite scarce in the marketplace. This is due primarily to tighter controls government has placed on the use of a key ingredient... uranium... that is needed to make this color of glass. Uranium is also employed in the production of armor piercing shells used by the military... and I also feel sure that the tighter controls on uranium was put in place to keep it out of the hands of would-be terrorists... hoping to build a “dirty bomb”. Uranium not only gives Vaseline glass its intriguing yellow green color but it is also what makes the glass give off its brilliant fluorescent glow under black light. Spooners... once a prominent fixture on most dinning room tables... have gone the way of the... Slat Dips... Bone Dishes... Water Pitchers... and others items... that seemed to have been a part of yesterdays... everyday life. Today... we may not need a Spooner as such... but wouldn’t this make just a super Vase for a bunch of cut flowers!!!... Or how about as a receptacle for serving fresh green onions or celery sticks in!!!... Or how about... just to set in the window... or on that special shelf... and simply enjoy!!!...
