If “Vaseline Glass” happens to be your “cup of tea”... then set back... relax... and take a “sip of this”!!!... BIG... BOLD... AND BEAUTIFUL!!!... These are the first words that come into my mind when “I” set back and view this large... footed... Vaseline Glass Water Pitcher. This stunning beauty... with it’s almost crystal like Vaseline body glass... stands just a bit under 9 inches tall from the table top to the highest point on the rim near the pour spout. It measures just a bit under 5 inches across the top... 8 ½ inches from the tip of the pour spout to the curve of the handle... and about 4 ¼ inches acrose the footed bottom. A close examination shows this bold expression of colored glass to be in excellent condition. I should also mention that this Vaseline Glass Pitcher is “breath-taking” in normal light... but really “comes to life”... in an explosion of yellow green fluorescence... under the Black Light. Collectors have given this pattern a number of names over the years. Some that come to mind are... “Buttons and Bows”... “Daisies and Button”... and the “Queen’s Pattern”. I’ve spent the last few hours searching through my reference books trying to come up with info on who originated this patter. I even used my... “phone a friend card”... and called a very knowledgeable collector... but with no success. So for the time being... the originator of the pattern will have to remain a mystery!!!... Being a collector myself I’ve always struggled to identify the pieces in my collection. Three things are important... the pattern... the maker... and when it was made. The more information I have on a piece... the better I like it. In some cases this information has eluded me... but not stopped me from buying something that I liked. I’ve always believed that the combination of... glass color and quality... interesting and attractive pattern... and level of workmanship... determines both my acceptance and the dollar value of a piece. If an item can not stand on it’s own in these areas... the addition of a “maker’s name” will not make it any more beautiful to the eye!!!... And to me... it’s only the “eye”... or is it “I”... that needs to be satisfied!!!... When I was a kid... a big old Water Pitcher like this was a common fixture on our dinner table... and always contained fresh ice-water. There was 10 in our family... and not always a lot of food to go around. So a good big glass of water helped fill that empty spot in your belly!!!... I don’t believe many dinning tables are graced with these large Water Pitchers anymore... they’ve seemed to have gone the way of the Spooners... Butter Dishes... Salt Dips... Bone Dishes and all the other items that used to be everyday visitors... to yesterday’s dinner table. But if you’re not inclined to use this beauty as a Water Pitcher... wouldn’t it make a absolutely stunning Vase???... Elegant design... unsurpassed workmanship... and unbelievable color. What more could we ask for in a “art-glass” treasure like this???... To see more interesting and unusual items... both from today and... days gone by... click on “See Seller’s other items” above.
